  • KARATE

There are many reasons why people take Karate. Some may want to enjoy the physical benefits it provides, while others may need Karate for personal safety. Karate is taught as a class, but is an individual sport, and can be tailored to each individual’s needs. You can progress at your own pace and learn the skills you feel comfortable with.

Many student’s grades improve by learning how to focus their attention properly. They have learned the skills necessary to become centered in their thoughts and to tune out all distractions around them. It is a blessing to see how Karate helps improve student’s lives. Whatever the reasons for taking Karate, it should become not just a class, but a way of life.

Shihan Sherry Brown is a 6th Degree Black Belt in the Okinawa Shorin Kenpo system and a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Jujitsu. She has taught over 10,000 students, including Christian Youth Organizations and disabled and battered women. Many of her students have gone on to become nationally ranked champions. She trained in the Seven Steps to Personal Safety during her work with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department. She has received recognition for her work with the following: The US Department of Justice, The Federal Women’s Program, The Johnson County Prosecutors Office, Channel 6 Hoosier Hero Award for Crime Prevention and Ford Motor Company.

The Philosophy of Martial Arts

Karate is a sport, an art, and a way of life. In Karate we focus our energies on the five maxims.

Character - being morally and spiritually balanced

Sincerity - being dedicated to the art and honest with yourself and others

Effort - accepting the challenges presented in your study of the art. Being willing to work for what you earn

Etiquette - respect for your instructor and all ranks higher than yourself

Self Control - being able to control any situation without resorting to violence. Being moderate in all aspects of life. Think of others safety in all phases of training.

Everyone can benefit from the knowledge received in a Karate class. We focus our energies on how to survive an attack.  We learn to be aware of our surrounding and to trust our natural instincts.

KARATE AT CHRIST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

In our Karate class, students will learn personal safety, confidence, physical fitness, respect and coordination. These classes are for children ages 5 to adult. Students will progress to different belt ranks once they are able to retain the knowledge they are shown.

This is a Christian Karate Class and we are here to learn how to stay safe while offering an outreach to our community. Through Karate, we are able to reach a variety of people through the community and offer them a connection to CUMC.

In a typical class, the first 10 minutes are dedicated to warm ups. The next 50 minutes, techniques are practiced and we review previously taught material. We close in prayer.

Our goal is to teach others how to protect themselves and to lead others to Christ.
